25 Walks in Dumfries and Galloway by Tom Prentice I visited Dumfries and Galloway for the first time last year, spending a week exploring and walking. I thought Ordnance Survey maps would be the only guide I really needed, but I soon found I wanted something extra - an expert local guidebook with walks suggestions and background information. Tom Prentice's book is both entertaining and informative, describing 25 separate walks that cover the high hills (well, at 843m Merrick is really a mountain!) but also the coast (St Ninian's Cave, Mull of Galloway, etc) and local towns (Dumfries, Kirkcudbright, etc). The text is lively and entertaining, but clear and always informative - plenty of historical detail which always makes a walking guidebook more readable than a simple 'turn right, turn left' book. There are colour photos throughout, and the maps are exceedingly clear (I ended up not bothering with OS maps apart from the hills). And despite having been published in 1995 I didn't find any significant changes brought about by the passage of time - although I should add that I completed only about half of the 25 walks. Dumfries and Galloway is a quiet, charming and very understated area: it's full of fascinating pockets of history, surprisingly rugged and virtually empty hills, and Prentice's book is the perfect guide for any visitor prepared to stretch their legs and go exploring.
Discovering Galloway by I. Macleod This reference is both a guidebook and a history of South-West Scotland, covering the landscape, natural history and way of life in the region. Routes for exploring the area and discovering items of interest by car or on foot are suggested.
Dumfries and Galloway by John Gifford The fourth volume in the "Buildings of Scotland" series, following in the footsteps of "Lothian", "Edinburgh", this book looks at the buildings of Dumfries and Galloway. Brilliant pictures of architecture of Dumfries & Galloway, would recommend this read for great visual immages & large text scope. Along with the history of the builders & buildings. Buy & Enjoy.
Travels in Galloway by Donald MacIntosh These travel memoirs from Galloway span from between the war years until current times and cover a wide spectrum of people and places. The subject matter encompasses, Galloway-Irish dialect, rock-fishing, the potato famine, harvesting, Italian PoWs, poaching and the daily trains.
Historic Stranraer This text, part of the Scottish Burgh Survey series, provides a guide to the borough of Stranraer, bringing together available historical and archaeological information.
